There are a few certainties in life, like death, taxes, and global climate change. Those familiar with popular culture and gaming can add another thing to the list: the spotty track record of video game-based movies (and movie-based games).

The latest game to join the Hollywood scene is a famous franchise that started in 1996: Need for Speed. While there have been plenty of sequels in the series, some over the top, and only a handful of serious ones, the movie will at least be based in reality – featuring many high-end cars that’ll certainly have petrolheads drooling.

It stars Aaron Paul, who many will know from hit TV series, Breaking Bad, and the sombre tone of the trailer makes this look rather promising. It’s still likely to be about fast cars, crashing, and explosions – but there’s just a hint of 1971’s Vanishing Point here, and that’s a good thing. Who doesn’t like a good ol’ car chase with an emotive soundtrack?
