22-billion block Britain built in Minecraft

There are ambitious Minecraft projects, like Star Trek’s Starship Enterprise and recreation of Westeros, from Game of Thrones, but those all pale in comparison to the latest effort.

The Verge has a story on Britain’s Ordnance Survey using the 3D block-based game to completely recreate the largest of the British islands. It took 22-billion of the game’s blocks to simulate 224 000 square kilometres, using the survey’s own mapping tools and data. But, thankfully, nobody actually sat there manually carving a blocky kingdom: using the Ordnance Survey data and tools, everything was generated in code and replicated in Minecraft.

Best of all, they’ve made it available for everybody to download. So now you, too, can run from London to Surrey in a day. As long as you have a machine that can handle the 3.6GB map.
