FNB CEO Michael Jordaan becomes chairman of Mxit

The soon to be former CEO of FNB Michael Jordaan has been revealed as the chairman of South African instant messaging app Mxit’s board of directors. Jordaan is leaving his role at FNB to be closer to his family and according to him “it was an easy decision to join as chairman and I am (he is) looking forward to playing a part in the future of Mxit, both in South Africa and internationally.” Jordaan replaces Francois Swart who was made the permanent CEO of Mxit last week after occupying the role of interim CEO after the departure of former CEO Alan Knott-Craig Jnr in October. Jordaan will not be taking a salary or a stake in the company initially, although he will be given the option to do so at a later stage.

Mxit is generally seen as the darling of the South African startup scene having had a meteoric rise to success since launch in 2007 and Jordaan is the man behind the reinvention of FNB in recent years to become the most talked about and forward thinking of the banks in terms of adopting technology. Mxit currently has around 7 million unique users a month who according to Jordaan use the platform for around 90 minutes a day each.
