Samsung’s Exynos 5 will be able to use all 8 cores by the end of the year

Since the launch of Samsung’s Exynos Octa processor many people (including myself) have been giving the processor a hard time for not being a true 8 core processor. The processor which uses ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture uses a 4 ARM 15 high powered cores to do the heavy lifting like video streaming and gaming partnered with 4 ARM 7 low powered cores to do the light stuff like calls and sms. The problem had been that the system was treated as 2 separate quad core units which meant programs either ran on the big or the LITTLE. Samsung announced that an update will bring Heterogeneous Multi-Processing which will allow any combination of all 8 of the cores to be used by an application. The update will not only unlock more powerful processing ability for devices using the SoCs but may also increase the potential power usage benefits by better utilising the available cores.
