Leaked Logitech iPhone gamepad could spell trouble for Sony/Nintendo

Now we have 64bit chips in our smartphones, there’s not a lot holding back mobile gaming from breaking out of the mainstream, so to speak, and taking on games of depth and understanding from the consoles and PCs. Except, that is, the fact that they’re hampered by touchscreen controls. So doomed forever to remain lightweight actioneers or Angry Birds clones.

Oh, wait.

A leak from the normally reliable @evleaks this morning could change all that. It’s got a picture of a very interesting accessory that Logitech is potentially working on for the iPhone 5. If the picture above turns into a real product then we should be seeing a controller for the iPhone that has the potential to do some serious damage to portable consoles like the PS Vita and Nintendo 3DS and perhaps more worrying for companies like Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo is that this could begin to threaten console sales.

With the introduction of iOS 7 Apple created the MFi (Made for iOS) certification standard for accessories which finally gives a standard for accessory manufacturers like Logitech a framework to work within for the creating game controllers that work with iOS. If you missed it, we ran a story a while back about Apple already having a gaming console available which fits in perfectly with the news today.
