Leap Motion controller to hit local shelves, soon

Gadget fans, rejoice. The Leap Motion controller, first teased in 2011, will go on sale within the next two weeks. The device will be exclusive to local technology retailer, Incredible Connection.

The Leap Motion is, for all intents and purposes, a Kinect sensor for computers. However, unlike Microsoft’s Xbox add-on, which is used for full-body tracking, the Leap Motion is far smaller and better suited to tracking precise movements from hands and fingers. Just about a third the size of a portable hard drive (80mm long and 13mm thick), the tiny device creates a 3D motion field in front of a user, allowing for air gestures. Inside the 1-metre-wide hemisphere it can motion-track all ten fingers, and has accuracy to 1/100th of a millimetre.

As an input device it isn’t meant to replace a mouse or keyboard, but rather supplement those peripherals. However, software needs to be supported to work with the device. For that, Leap Motion has its Airspace marketplace, where developers can add their Leap Motion-enhanced software, as well as plugins for existing software to use the controller – just like SpaceX did, when it used the Leap Motion to simulate the virtual reality interface from the Iron Man movies.

Incredible Connection has confirmed to us that it will retail for R1 299.95 (the US price is $79.99, excluding tax and shipping). It requires a USB 2.0 port, and will work with any computer that runs Windows 7/8, or Mac OS X 10.7 or later.
