Battlefield 4 beta now open to all

I saw a bit of Battlefield 4 at rAge yesterday, and I must say it’s looking really, really good. That Frostbite 3 engine really is something else, but more than that the devs appear to have made a huge number of subtle, under-the-hood changes that set it apart from BF3. More on that in a future post.

Gamers who’ve been waiting to try the game out will be happy to know that the Battlefield 4 beta went live yesterday. Unfortunately it’s not open to absolutely everyone; PC gamers will need to be running a 64-bit operating system before they can download and play. It’s also not the full game, it’s just the Siege of Shanghai  multiplayer map that can be played in two different modes (Conquest and Domination), but it should showcase much of what there is to look forward to in the full game, including the new “levelution” technology that has things like weather changes and collapsing buildings changing levels as you play. It will also give the devs the opportunity to get feedback from players, and make last-minute changes before the full game goes live.

To participate as a PC user, in addition to a 64-bit OS you’ll need an Origin account and the Origin game client from EA, which can be obtained here; once that’s all set up, simply follow the Battlefield 4 beta links in the app, download approximately 1.5GB of data and you’re good to go.

Xbox 360 and PS3 gamers simply have to download the beta data from their respective storefronts.

Battlefield 4 launches on the 29th of October for all current-gen platforms, with PS4 and Xbox One versions arriving in those territories lucky enough to be getting the new consoles right as they launch: the 12th of November for PS4 and the 19th of November for Xbox One. South Africans will have to wait until at least December 13 for the PS4; the local Xbox One release date is still not known.

Those gamers looking to get maximum bang for their Battlefield buck should consider buying the Premium edition of the game, as it includes multiple add-on packs that drop throughout the game’s lifespan, and they release two weeks early only for Premium subscribers.
