GTA V smashes even more sales records

We previously reported that Grand Theft Auto V enjoyed exceptionally good day-one sales, and it has now been confirmed by Guinness World Records that the game has gone on to demolish not just one, but six records for the sales of an entertainment title.

Setting the record for day-one sales of $800 million in revenue and 11.21 million copies sold wasn’t enough, apparently: sales hit the billion-dollar mark just two days later on September 20, 2013, just three days after the game went on sale and in so doing ticked a number of boxes on Guinness’s criteria for sales achievements.

The full list of the records GTA V now holds are:

1.    Best-selling action-adventure videogame in 24 hours
2.    Best-selling videogame in 24 hours
3.    Fastest entertainment property to gross $1 billion
4.    Fastest videogame to gross $1 billion
5.    Highest grossing videogame in 24 hours
6.    Highest revenue generated by an entertainment product in 24 hours
7.    Most viewed trailer for an action-adventure videogame

You’ll notice from #3 and#6 that this means it has made more money in a shorter time than even the biggest movies, an utterly stupendous achievement that just a few years ago wouldn’t have even been thought possible.

This bodes incredibly well for gamers fond of open-world, gritty, violent games, as GTA V’s success means there will soon be a whole lot of publishers keen to ride the wave of its success with their own take on the formula.

Well done, Rockstar – you guys kick ass. Now, how about using some of that cash to make a PC port of the game….?
