How to stop Google using your face in its ads

Google’s new Terms of Service come into effect from the 11th of November and a lot of people are unhappy at the news that Google is going to start using the names and images of users in advertising. Google calls it “shared endorsements” but we think it’s a bit creepy. At htxt.africa we take privacy seriously, especially a user’s choice to keep their online lives as private as they want even if they choose to use a free service like the ones Google provides.

The good news is that you can easily opt out of the new “shared endorsements” advertising using the steps below.

  1. Click on this link. (Log into your Google account if you aren’t already logged in)
  2. Scroll down until you see this checkbox

Checkbox

  1. Uncheck the chckbox
  2. Click on ‘Save’

Congratulations you are now opted out of “shared endorsements”. Now that you’ve got this far though, we’d like to know if you think shared endorsements are a good thing, would you click on an advert for a company one of your friends recommends? Give us your opinion on the subject in the comments below.
