Here’s what the sky looks like when you turn off all the city lights

Professional photographer, Thierry Cohen, wanted to see what the world’s major cities would look like if all the lights were turned off. With the premise that light pollution ruins our view of a gorgeous night sky, he start a project in 2010 to show us what the urban skies should really look like.

The resulting photographs were on display at the Danziger Gallery, and they’re also available to view online.

Cohen’s technique for taking his photos is quite simple, in theory. He visited cities to take photos, noting the time, angle, latitude and longitude. As the earth turns on its axis, the stars and nebulae that are invisible above those cities become visible in clearer areas. Thierry travelled to the Atacama, Sahara, and Mojave deserts to capture the unsullied cosmic views. He then composited the photos of cityscapes with the brilliant views of the stars above. The images are below, and they’re also available on the Danziger Gallery’s website.
