Update your iPhone: iOS 7.0.3 available now

In line with last night’s announcements from Apple, the company has released a small point update for its mobile operating system, iOS.

The new version, iOS 7.0.3, has a few small fixes – including a calibration fix for the motion compass and motion sensors – but most importantly it adds iCloud Keychain functionality for all devices. iCloud Keychain was always slated to be part of iOS, and it was available during the beta stages, but Apple chose to only roll it out after the announcement and release of OS X Mavericks. The new feature lets you synchronise passwords across devices, so when you’ve saved a password or login on your desktop you’ll have the details remembered on your iPhone or iPad. iCloud keychain also stores credit card details, if enabled.

With full integration in Safari, iCloud Keychain will offer to generate random passwords, as well as store them for you. This way you don’t have to remember complex passwords, or risk security by reusing your same old pass phrases.

Also added to iOS 7.0.3 are:

  • Web and Wikipedia search have been re-added to the Spotlight search. This feature was missing from the initial iOS 7 release, though it was present in previous versions of iOS. It was widely used though, so seeing it return makes us happy.
  • iMessage has now been fixed. With iOS 7.0.2 some users had problems with both receiving iMessages as well as registering for the service.
  • Accelerometer calibration has been fixed. Many reports around the web blamed this on faulty hardware, when it was just a software calibration issue. All compass and spirit level readouts are now as they should be.
  • The “Reduce Motion” option in Accessibility Settings has been enhanced even more. Those who’ve experienced motion sickness due to the zooming and tilting effects in iOS 7 can rest easy: the enhanced motion reduction removes those effects completely, replacing transitions with a soothing fade animation.

The update is live now, and can be downloaded over the air by going to Settings -> General -> Software Update. Depending on the device, it’ll be a download of between 50 and 90MB. Alternatively, plugging your phone into your computer and updating through iTunes would achieve the same, but with a larger download of 1.3GB.
