Double Dragon Triple Threat

Did you play Double Dragon way back in the day? Did you embark on the mission to rescue Billy’s girlfriend from the evil Black Shadows Gang by punching, kicking, head-butting and thwacking bad guys with bats, knives, whips and more?

If you did, and you’ve got a hankering for some nostalgia, you’ll be very happy to know that all three Double Dragon games will be available for iOS and Android phones and tablets sometime before the end of the year, courtesy of developer DotEmu, a studio known for re-invigorating older games for modern platforms.

This is according to a press release that went out yesterday. The games will be optimised for phones and tablets, and come with a few new features to make the modern-day experience even better than before: Bluetooth controllers will be supported to make kicking butt easier to pull off, and gamers will be able to choose between the original 8-bit music or a remastered soundtrack. It will even be possible to play with a friend over Bluetooth.

The official press release outlines the game’s features thusly:

  • Two game modes: “Arcade” (play the game from beginning to end and go for the high score) and “Story” (unlock new stages and achievements while playing through the game)
  • Customisable controls
  • Three difficulty levels: “mobile” (specially balanced for mobile games), “original” (similar to the arcade version) and “expert” (a real challenge!)
  • Achievements & leaderboards via Game Centre and Google Play Game Service
  • Choose between the original 8-bit soundtrack and a brand-new remastered one!
  • Co-op mode (two players) via bluetooth
  • Gamepad support: compatible with most Android controllers and soon with most iOS controllers too

DotEmu did a great job of resurrecting oldies Another World, R-Type and Metal Slug, so hope is high that the Double Dragon trilogy will be a faithful and polished port of another iconic 80s arcade series. No price for the game was mentioned, though, but it would be a surprise if it cost more than fifty bucks.
