Here’s why people are changing their Facebook profile pics to giraffes

The short answer: because of a riddle.

The longer answer: it’s one of those technically-it’s-this, ambiguously-worded riddles. And if you answer incorrectly, you’re socially obliged to change your profile photo to a giraffe, for three days.

It all started with New Zealand YouTuber, Andrew Strugnell, who posted the video above posing the riddle and setting the challenge. The riddle goes like this:

It’s 3 a.m., the doorbell rings and you wake up. Unexpected visitors! It’s your parents and they are here for breakfast. You have strawberry jam, honey, wine, bread and cheese. What is the first thing you open?

In his video he urges people to message him with the answer, on Facebook, and he’ll let them know whether or not they’re a giraffe.

Since then, a number of Facebook users have found out that they are in fact Giraffa camelopardalis, rather than homo sapiens. As with most silly riddles, the obvious answer is the one alluded to in the beginning, and the wording is purposely designed to trick you by shifting the focus of the question at hand. While some might say, “the wine, to let it breathe in the meantime”, the real answer is in fact a bit more obvious: the first thing you open is (Redacted – Spoiler ed).

Even then, there is debate among logical thinkers all over Facebook. Some say that your eyes are the first thing you open, given that you wake up. Though the counterargument there is that you’ve already done, reasoning that you already know your parents are the ones at the door – and you must therefore have seen them.

The ambiguous language, vague details, and theoretical scenario are classic argument fuel. And soon we’ll have another “plane on a conveyor belt runway” situation on our hands.

So, what are you: a human or a giraffe?
