HTC’s new phablet has a fingerprint reader

HTC has just taken the wraps off of its new One max phablet a whole day before the launch event that was scheduled for tomorrow. The One max features the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor and 2GB of RAM that the HTC One has but brings a new 5.9 inch 1080p display along with a new fingerprint reader for quick unlocks on its back. Another notable addition is a microSD card slot which was absent in both the HTC One and One X flagship devices from the last 18 months.

The One max has the same 4Mp Ultrapixel camera that the HTC One and One Mini had which favours a collection of fewer, larger 2 micron wide pixels (sensor sites) over phones like iPhone 5S which has an 8Mp camera with 1.5 microns wide pixels. It does however lose out on the optical image stabilisation which the One had but Adam assures me that this may not necessarily mean worse low light imaging performance.

The impressive spec of the One max has to be its gargantuan 3300mAh battery which bests the 3200mAh unit in the Galaxy Note 3 that seemed to last us forever. HTC are even offering a “power flip case” for the One max replete with  a 1200mAh flexible battery that boosts the potential battery to 4500mAh – madness I tell you!

On the software side, the One max is running Android 4.3 with a freshly updated version of HTC Sense customisation (Version 5.5). The big update here is to the BlinkFeed news and social aggregator which gains support for Instagram, Google+ and Tumblr while also gaining RSS feed support and the ability to store up to 150 stories offline to get your read on even when you lose connection.
