The modded PCs of rAge

South Africa. I am very disappointed in you. I went along to rAge yesterday to see lots of games and thousands of gamers. And you let me down.

It looked bit like this. Which is great.

modded PCs of South Africa_6_3Thousands of players. Having fun. Winning ladders. Sleeping rough.

What I didn’t see was more than a handful of creatively modded PCs. Come on South Africa. You can do better than this. I know there’s a wealth of creative talent, more than able to weild an airbrush in anger or hammer together a couple of metal sheets into something special.

Where’s the beadwork air intakes, where’s the tin can exhaust port? The mudcloth enclosures or the potjiekos pot case?

Sure, there are lots of beastly looking giant PCs, water cooled PCs and even refridgerated PCs on the – not a bad idea, considering the ambient temperature in the Randburg Dome – and these are all worthy and intimidating and colourful and mean. But externally modified lookers? Not so many.

Except, well, there were a few.

I'm a sucker for these ORAC-like transparent boxes. Simple. Different.

I'm not actually sure if this is self modded or an off-the-shelf job, but it looks great, and it's yellow. Full of win.

The practical mod. Not much to look at, bbut hella easy to lift.

#But wait. There is one which stands head and shoulders above the rest and is a testament to what can be done. Jacques Naude, with your home-made wooden cabinet, designed both for craftmanship looks and ease of lift, we salute you. This lovely wooden box, says Jacques, was put together in his father’s woodworking studio at home and combines rugged durability with varnished good looks.

Thanks to big air ducts, it’s easy to keep cool too, apparently.

Look at this South Africa, and weep. And go away and learn to better next year.
