Assassin’s Creed IV Easter eggs hint at Ubisoft’s future plans

[Ed’s Note: If you wish to read the redacted bits, simply highlight the relevant passages with your mouse]

If you want to discover what I’m talking about for yourself, or you don’t want to read any spoilers about the Assassin’s Creed franchise, stop reading right here. Close the browser, go fire up your copy of AC4 and do a bit of your own poking around, if you prefer. If you want a hint, it’s that you’ll find what I’m about to unveil in the Abstergo offices, and you’ll need the ability to hack your colleagues’ Animus terminals to do it.

Those of you interested in having your minds blown without having to go digging for the info yourself, read on. I can’t take credit for finding these Easter eggs myself, however – I don’t know who found them originally but they were reported on by the likes of Polygon, USGamer.net and Kotaku.

Firstly, the story of the protagonist from the first Assassin’s Creed games, Desmond Miles, might not be over even though Ubisoft implied that he died at the end of AC3. According to a video unearthed in Assassin’s Creed IV’s hacking sub-game that happens in the Abstergo offices, his DNA has been harvested from his very-much-confirmed-to-be-dead body and preserved in such a way that it is possible for Abstergo to explore his story and those of his ancestors even further than has already been done. It’s a delightful twist that opens up the possibilities for future AC games quite dramatically.

But even that has nothing on the second Easter egg:hacking another of your colleagues’ Animus terminals yields a brochure from the Blume Corporation that talks about the idea of a super-smart security operating system called ctOS. Astute readers will know that ctOS is the city-wide operating system that hacker Aiden Pearce abuses to achieve his aims in Watch_Dogs,, which pretty much confirms that the Assassin’s Creed and Watch_Dogs universes ARE ONE AND THE SAME! The implications – and potential for future crossover games featuring both franchises – are mind-blowing!

Or, it’s just a simple Easter egg. Me, I don’t think so – it’s too good an opportunity for Ubisoft to be passing up in favour of just name-dropping another of their games.

Taking this one step further, I hope to one day play some sort of Assassin’s Creed/Watch_Dogs and possibly even Splinter Cell crossover game; I think it’d be fantastic to play as someone re-living Sam Fishers memories of trying to stop Abstergo from taking over the world, or something like that. The sky’s the limit!
