South Africa’s first accredited games design course to start in Joburg

Do you want to learn how to make videogames? If so, you’ll be pleased to know that the Friends of Design Academy of Digital Arts is opening a new campus in Johannesburg in early November 2013, and it is offering a course on Game Technology and Interactive Media that will help aspirant game creators learn the skills needed to make their dreams a reality.

Eva Csernyanszky, founder of Friends of Design, says “The college has had enormous success at its Cape Town campus and will be offering equally high standards at its new campus in Rosebank, Johannesburg, which opens for registration in November.”

Csernyanszky also said that the reason the Cape Town campus had proven so successful was because students received instruction from industry experts, who deliver their training with enthusiasm and passion.

The full-time, one-year Game Technology and Interactive Media course kicks off in February 2014, and students will be taught all about scripting, augmented reality, level and character design, programming and how to design effective, interesting levels for their games. They will also be exposed to comprehensive game theory and strategy, as well as the vital element of effectively pitching their games and ideas to publishers. By the end of the course, students will also have a complete understanding of the various roles within game design teams so that they can operate effectively as part of one.

There is a catch, however: this course is not for beginners, or for anyone who doesn’t speak English fluently. A certificate, diploma or degree in a related field is required, or you must have at least one year of work experience in 3D animation or programming in Javascript or CSharp.

The new campus doesn’t just teach game design, however: it will also offer training in various Adobe desktop publishing  software packages like InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and Finishing Arts, with evening Web classes that cover HTML and CSS.

If any of this is catching your attention, head over to the Friends of Design webpage for further details.
