Old vs. New: Five reasons to keep your old consoles

The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 might be close to release, and the temptation to abandon your 360 or PS3 in favour of newer, faster, shinier everything might be strong. Our advice: don’t do it. There is a lot of life left in the soon-to-be “old” consoles, and here are five reasons why.

1. They will still get new games

It’s not like developers will just stop making 360 and PS3 games – both consoles have an absolutely huge install-base and it wouldn’t make sense for game developers to suddenly ignore those tens of millions of potential customers. Here is a sample of current-gen exclusives that are still coming in 2013 and 2014:

Gran Turismo 6
The Last Guardian
Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix
Until Dawn
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2
Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII
Tekken X Street Fighter

2. There are a ton of old games you haven’t played yet

Games are absolutely stuffed with content, taking anything from a few hours up to 100 hours and more to complete, so it’s highly unlikely you got to play every single game you wanted to from this current generation. By not snapping up a new PS4 or Xbox One right away, you’ve immediately bought yourself a bit of time to spend on catching up on PS3 and Xbox 360 titles you may have missed.

3. Cheap 360s and PS3s coming soon

If you’re new to this whole gaming thing, or have been thinking about doing a bit of dabbling but you’ve been put off by the consoles’ prices, you’ll soon have the opportunity to pick up cheap Xbox 360s and PlayStation 3s. The launch of new hardware inevitably leads to previous-gen price drops, giving thrifty shoppers the chance to snap 360s and PS3s up for cheap, plus there will probably be a lot of people selling their old hardware second-hand to make the newer consoles more affordable.

4. Neither new console is backwards compatible

It’s sad, but true: Replaying old favourites will still need a PS3 or Xbox 360 due to the changes Sony and Microsoft have both made to their respective consoles. There might be some form of backwards compatibility via services like Sony’s Gaikai and Microsoft’s as-yet-unnamed game streaming services that run on their new systems via the Cloud, but even if that happens, chances are good you’ll have to pay again to play your old games that way, and that just sucks.

5. Grand Theft Auto V

Rockstar will probably be porting GTA V over to the PS4 and Xbox One, but until then the only way to play this fantastic piece of digital art is on your old console. That right there is reason enough to not chuck out your old hardware, nevermind anything else.

These are but five good reasons to stick with your ageing console. You probably have a few more of your own, which you’re welcome to share with us in the comments.
