Star Wars Episode VII lands 25 months from now

Today marks the day that one of the most important future dates for all of geekdom is announced: the premiere for a new Star Wars movie. And it’ll hit theatres on the 18th of December, 2015.

Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios, issued a statement with the date on the Star Wars website. The announcement also comes after it was made known that JJ Abrams would be directing the new Star Wars movie, while two original Trilogy contributors will also work on the new movie: Lawrence Kasdan will be writing the script, and John Williams will return to work on the score.

Disney acquired the Lucafilm last year, for $4.05-billion, and part of the deal included the Star Wars franchise. While George Lucas said he would not make another film after the most recent trilogy (Episodes I, II, and III), there was nothing said about other directors and producers having a go at it. Given the somewhat unwelcome reception given to the most recent films, by die-hard Star Wars fans, it’s safe to assume that any future attempts at Star Wars movies would be given the proper treatment.

So here’s hoping that the next 25 months are spent doing the kinds of things that will not only make existing fans very happy, but also draw new fans to the series.
