So you’ve heard that the PlayStation 4’s 500GB hard drive can be replaced with whatever drive you’d rather have in there, right? But of course you don’t know what the process is going to be like because you don’t have a PS4 yet, and you can’t tinker with it for another month. I know I keep banging on about that particular nugget, but honestly I’m a bit grated that down here in little old South Africa we’re kind of sucking the hind teat when it comes to the new consoles.

Well, the guys over at Gamespot don’t have the same problem, and have saved you the trouble of tinkering on your own: they’ve posted a quick video showing all of the steps you’ll need to take to get rid of Sony’s 5400RPM 500GB drive, and install a shiny new solid-state disk. It’s surprisingly easy, too, requiring only a familiarity with the Principles of Unscrewing, knowledge of Flashdrive use and how to create folders with specific names, as well as experience with downloading files from the interwebs. All pretty easy, right? Indeed, it is.

Once that’s done, you’ll also get to see how much faster a downloaded game loads on Sony’s new shiny. Spoiler alert: it’s quicker by a factor of two.

At the end of the day, if you’re willing to drop another R5500-odd on a 512GB SSD on top of the R6300 you’ll be paying for a PlayStation 4, you too can experience faster load times of your PS4 games come December 13. Or, you can take a slightly less expensive approach and simply replace Sony’s drive with a 1TB and get more space, but no speed boost.
