Here’s what happened to Paul McGann’s Doctor Who

Next weekend the internet is going to break. Our prediction is that the sheer number of global geeks downloading the 50th anniversary issue of Doctor Who – Day of the Doctor – will destroy the internet forever. The episode is going to be popular, not just because it features all the previous doctors in some form or another, but it will also tie up all the loose ends from Matt Smith’s reign as teh eleventh doctor and see him hand the role over to Peter Capaldi, with John Hurt reprising his cameo as ‘War Doctor’.

But what, we hear you ask, about Paul McGann? The actor played the Doctor in a US-produced spin-off movie, which was banished from the canon by fans and then grudgingly readmitted later on. At the start of the McGann movie, we see the previous Doctor, Sylvester McCoy, regenerate into McGann, but we never see McGann’s transition to Christopher Eccleston.

As a teaser for the 50th anniversary episode, the BBC has released this one-off webisode which doesn’t just sort out that little dilemma, it opens up some really interesting possibilities for Day of the Doctor. Watch this, and suddenly next saturday will seem a long, long way away.
