Next year’s PlayStation 4 games will be better

Let’s face it, the PlayStation 4’s launch line-up isn’t that exciting. A few disc-based games and a handful of downloadable indie titles available right now (and at its 13 December local launch) aren’t exactly going to leave us feeling like we absolutely have to have the next-gen machine – and it’s not helped any by the fact that some of those launch games – Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts, FIFA 14, Need for Speed Rivals, and more – are just prettier versions of games currently available on the PlayStation 3.

Of course, we won’t begrudge anybody who wants to satiate their gadget lust with a shiny new PS4 this Christmas. And, thankfully, the boring list of launch games will be joined by some superb titles in the coming months. Grab your wishlist and scribble down some of these names, because here’s what you have to look forward to in the next few months of PlayStation 4 ownership.

Thief

This reboot of the late 90s sneak-em-up sees protagonist Garrett make a return – and everything will look even better than before. A new generation of gamers will get to roam free in the city, performing stealth missions that the series is known for.

Expected: February 2014

inFAMOUS: Second Son

logo-1

While it didn’t quite start off a huge success, the inFAMOUS franchise has gained a strong following – and also remained exclusive to the PlayStation. This time around players take control of a new character, but all the action is set in the same universe as the previous games, following on from earlier events. And what better than a new addition to the franchise to draw players to the new console?

Expected: March 2014

WATCH_DOGS

logo-2

WATCH_DOGS has been plagued by a few delays, but this highly anticipated title – a cyberpunk Grand Theft Auto of sorts – looks like it will be a lot of fun. Set in future Chicago, players will have full access to the open world, and hacking abilities that let them manipulate traffic lights, steal information, and drop in on phone calls.

Expected: Q2, 2014

Driveclub

With the PlayStation 3 getting Gran Turismo 6, the PS4 currently lacks any sort of driving game to entice gamers. That should be taken care of by Driveclub, when it lands. Originally set to be a launch title, this racer with a difference should bring something new to the genre. Developer Evolution Studios – previously known for the excellent WRC games on PS2 – have baked in a lot of multiplayer and club-type features.

Expected: Q1, 2014

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes

logo-4

Japanese creative genius Hideo Kojima knows how to keep fans in anticipation, and Ground Zeroes will be one of two MGS games to land next year. It’ll set the scene for The Phantom Pain, by telling the story of the events that unfolded after Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. And given that it’s a few months off, you can use that time to catch up on MGS mythology by playing the existing games.

Expected: Q2, 2014

The Elder Scrolls Online

logo-6

For many years players have enjoyed offline play in the vast worlds of The Elder Scrolls games, but the next-generation consoles will mark the first time the series goes online. The massively multiplayer role playing game will take place 1 000 years before the events of the 5th game – Skyrim – and players will be seamlessly connected to a huge online world to fight undead armies and complete quests together.

Expected: Q2, 2014

The Crew

logo-7

An illegal street racing game with a storyline? Sign us up. The Crew will see players rise through the ranks to take over an infamous street racing gang in Detroit – and events will also be run in New York and Los Angeles. It’ll also support cross platform play, letting gamers continue to build their careers on Android and iOS devices.
