Google’s Doctor Whoodle mini-game is awesome

Are you ready for tomorrow night’s feature length 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who? The Day of the Doctor will see the handover from Matt Smith to Peter Capaldi and will be shown on DSTV’s BBC Entertainment at the same time as it’s broadcast in the UK (sadly that means 21.50 SA time – too late for the kiddies).

It’s going to be huge, climactic, final and it even has John Hurt in a cameo role and see David Tennant reprise his turn as the Gallifrean too, in keeping with traditional anniversary features which have had multiple Doctors working together in the past (The Five Doctors was produced for the show’s 20th anniversay).  What more could you ask for?

dr who 3How about a special Google Doodle to celebrate? Oh yes. Nerd fans at Google HQ have come up with an interactive game in which the 11 incarnations of the timelord have to save the letters of the search engine’s name from classic baddies. There’s daleks, cybermen and even weeping angels, all rendered in retro 8bit-o-rama. It’s simple, fiendish fun mostly based around timing your moves to avoid danger, and should only take 10 minutes or so to complete.

You can play it by clicking on the Google logo from any search page today.

dr who2Incidentally, if you want to watch Day of the Doctor with company, I’ll be MCing a special screening at geek outfitters and nerd shop Fairy Goth Mother on 7th Street in Linden tomorrow night. There’s food, drinks and a cosplay competition, plus anecdotes about daleks and K9 from me. There is a R20 entry free for those not wearing costumes which will be donated to children’s cancer charity CHOC.

And if that’s not enough to whet your appetite, here’s the official trailer again.
