Turn-based Warhammer 40,000 game coming Q2 2014

Turn-based games are seeing a resurgence thanks to 2012’s excellent XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Combine that with the success of collectible card-based strategy games like Magic: The Gathering, and you have a recipe for success. Or, at least, that’s what developer HeroCraft is hoping – the studio has just announced the release date of Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf, a strategy game that makes use of both mechanisms.

As reported by Joystiq, the game will be out for PC, iOS and Android devices in Q2, 2014. Interestingly, it was also announced that it will be a free-to-play game, as well as its availability on unspecified “other platforms” when it launches.

HeroCraft released a video of the game’s mechanics at work alongside the announcement, showing turn-based combat that uses cards from a battle deck to buff units and give then extra abilities that can turn the tide of battle if used wisely.

So what you’ll be getting is a turn-based strategy game with card combat elements, set in the awesome Warhammer 40,000 universe that has the most badass soldiers and weapons this side of nowhere, all for free.

It’s unclear whether it being free-to-play means there will ben a pay-to-win mechanic or if the things you can buy will be merely aesthetic in nature. I just hope it’s better than the recent efforts to turn Games Workshop’s amazing IP into games, like the dismal Space Hulk and Dungeonbowl.

For a very brief taste of what’s in store for you in Space Wolf, check out the announcement trailer below.
