Spike TV’s 2013 videogame awards winners revealed

Spike TV’s annual videogame awards show has been rebranded as VGX[Enter Year Here], and the first show – VGX2013 – was aired on Saturday night, hosted by gaming journo Geoff Keighley and Community’s Joel McHale, and the three-hour-long broadcast was streamed live on the internet. Many awards were handed out, some predictable, others quite surprising. Here are a few of the highlights.

Rockstar’s incredible Grand Theft Auto V walked away with three awards, including the highly-prized Game Of The Year award. According to VG247.com, the game received nine nominations, including for Best Xbox Game, Best Studio and Best Song in a Game, winning in two: GOTY and Best Soundtrack.

Fans voted Titanfall as the most anticipated game of 2014, which was up against stiff competition from the likes of Watch_Dogs, Destiny, The Stick of Truth and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Character of the Year, also voted on by fans, produced one of the evening’s surprises: The Lutece Twins, the strange couple from Bioshock Infinite won against Trevor Philips from GTA V, Lara Croft of rebooted franchise fame, and Naiee and Nyaa from the unique platformer Two Brothers. I was sure Trevor was going to take it, having thoroughly enjoyed his psychotic performance in GTA V, but perhaps psychosis is overdone and the gaming world was in need of something with a little more mystery and class.

The four nominees for PC Game of the Year included Battlefield 4, The Stanley Parable, Gone Home and the quirky Papers, Please. The award went to Gone Home, an atmospheric game that tells its poignant story about a missing family through the exploration of their empty house and the things that were left behind.

The best Action Game of 2013 went to Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag for that game’s engaging pirate gameplay that has players swashbuckling around the Caribbean, attacking ships, solving puzzles and incidentally also assassinating people along the way. This was a hard-won victory that carries a lot of weight, as the game was up against the likes of The Last of Us, GTA V and Tomb Raider, all excellent games in their own right.

Forza 5 secured the Best Driving Game award, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon won for being the best downloadable content and The Last of Us was chosen as the Best PlayStation Game. The Last of Us was a no-brainer as best PlayStation game as it has sold 3.46 million copies at the time of writing. It’s also a superb game, and one of the best-looking titles for Sony’s ageing PlayStation 3.
