Today is the day you can finally buy a PlayStation 4 in South Africa. We were lucky enough to attend the press launch for the console this past Tuesday, where we spent some quality time with, and put together the above “First Look/Look Back” video detailing history of the PlayStation as well as introducing the PS4. We will have a more exhaustive review of the console up once we’ve spent some more time with it.
Gamers lucky enough to have grabbed one already will be able to play up to 21 launch titles if they’ve got the cash – PS4 games are quite a bit pricier than those for the PS3. Here’s the full list, made up of both disc-based games and digital-only games that can be bought through the PlayStation Store.

The console’s games start at R399, with the highest-profile games going for R799 each. You can get them cheaper if you buy disc-based PS4 games from online e-tailers like Kalahari.com and Takealot, which discount prices compared to brick-and-mortar stores. To offset the cost of games, you might want to consider signing up for Sony’s PlayStation Plus programme, which gives you access to games for both the PS3, PS4 and PS Vita consoles, for an annual subscription fee of just R469.
As you may know by now, the base price for the PS4 itself and a single controller is R6 299.95, and it is available from all major consumer electronics retailers. If you battle to find one, however, another wave of consoles will be arriving in stores on the 20th of December according to the console’s local distributor, Ster Kinekor.
What we recommend is shopping around for console bundles that include another controller, a few games and the PlayStation Camera that’s needed to use the console’s augmented reality and voice-recognition capabilities. Most bundles start at around R7 500, and for will vary according to the retailer.
