Retina iPad Mini in SA tomorrow

If you’ve been hoping for a Retina display equipped iPad Mini under the Christmas tree this year then you may just be in luck. The 7.9 inch equipped Mini will go on sale tomorrow in South Africa with prices ranging from R4 999 for the entry level 16GB model with WiFi to R10 499 for the 128GB WiFi and 3G equipped top end model.

When the tablet was announced by Apple they admitted that the iPad Mini’s most requested upgrade from users was the update to a Retina display, which resulted in the new model with a stunning 2048 x 1536 resolution display. While the resolution is the same as the iPad Air’s the Retina Mini has a much higher pixel density of 326ppi (pixels per inch) vs the Air at 264ppi. That increase in resolution comes at a cost unfortunately, that of weight, with the new Retina iPad Mini tipping the scales a full 10% heavier than the outgoing generation at 331 grams (341 for the 3G models).

The iPad Mini shares most of its internals with the iPad Air and the iPhone 5s for that matter. They all use the same Apple designed A7 processor, albeit at different clock speeds, with the M7 motion coprocessor inside to alleviate processing of mundane movement based applications from the main chip. All iPads are still capable of their famed 10 hours of battery life on a single charge and they now feature and feature the standard array of wireless communications including Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11n WiFi and LTE bands for mobile data in the corresponding models.

Only four of the eight  models will be available in South Africa at launch though and even then not in both colours in most cases.
