Samsung’s new GamePad for Galaxy smartphones

Meet Samsung’s new game controller for Android smartphones, the aptly named GamePad. The GamePad will work with any Samsung Galaxy smartphone running Android 4.1 or higher and can accommodate screen sizes of 4 inches all the way up to 6.3 inches. It has all of the requisite game controlling buttons including a D-pad, two analogue sticks, two shoulder buttons and a set of four action buttons on the front. There are also ‘Star’ and ‘Select’ buttons along with a ‘Play’ button which launches the Mobile Console app which let’s you browse and purchase GamePad compatible games.

It connects and pairs via NFC and Bluetooth 3.0 and the press release doesn’t rule out the possibility that it could work with other brands of smartphone as well. Since it connects wirelessly, the GamePad can be used to control a game being broadcast to a TV via a DLNA based streaming service like Samsung’s own All-Share or via HDMI, while the smartphone charges.

The GamePad weighs in at a relatively meaty 195 grams which is probably due to the ‘durable steel frame’ that Samsung says it used, while the paltry 160mAh battery could prove to be the Achilles heel of a device that is meant to compete with portable gaming consoles like the PlayStation Vita which gets around 5 hours of gaming on a single charge.

Samsung says that there are 35 launch titles available for the GamePad including:

  • Need for Speed Most Wanted
  • Asphalt 8: Airborne
  • Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour
  • Virtua Tennis Challenge
  • Prince of Persia : The Shadow and the Flame

With more slated to arrive through 2014.
