If you’ve been living under the impression that no-one really cares about online piracy of movies in South Africa, it might be time to start thinking about where you get your flicks from. MyBroadband is reporting that SA cops have made their first arrest for uploading a film to torrent site, the Pirate Bay.
According to the report, the unnamed con who’s accused of uploading an unnamed film is from Cape Town, and will appear in court tomorrow. Head of the Southern African Federation Against Copyright Theft (SAFACT), Corné Guldenpfennig, told MyBroadband that they are currently investigating more cases, and are sure that these charges will stick.
“You have to be extremely careful before making a first example,” Guldenpfennig said. “We made extremely certain of all the rights issues around this situation.”
We’ll be keeping an eye on the courts tomorrow to watch how this one goes down.
The Pirate Bay itself was forced to change its domain location earlier this week after yet another server seizure which saw piratebay.sx taken down by the authorities on tiny Caribbean island Sint Maarten. The site is back up and running with a Peruvian (pe) TLD.
