SA-bound Hisense smart TVs feature Android and VOD

Chinese electronics giant Hisense announced today that it will be unveiling a number of new high-end TVs at the 2014 CES in Las Vegas, and that those TV sets will also be making their way to South Africa.

The new models will feature JAMDEO, a custom-skinned version of Android that’s designed for use on television sets. With Android proving popular for tablets and smartphones, it only makes sense to also use it as a media interface for televisions – especially now that there are video sharing technologies that let users push content between Android devices, without complicated setup procedures.

There’s also the added bonus of JAMDEO having Netflix, Amazon, Vudu, and YouTube as content partners. It’s not a guarantee that those services will be offered on the models sold in SA, but that it has backing from existing content companies is promising, and means local providers can also get on board.

Hisense also says that the new models will feature Vidmind technology. This is potentially more interesting, as it’s a technology designed to let content owners create their own cloud-based content-delivery service. That is to say, local companies could more easily become online TV operators, effectively negating the need to set up infrastructure to deliver digital content. If Hisense can get South African content providers to adopt this, it could have a huge advantage over other TV manufacturers, locally.

In addition, like many of its existing models, the new TVs will be produced locally, at the Hisense plant in Atlantis, Cape Town.
