The Playstation 4 beat the Xbox One in 2013

Both Microsoft and Sony have released the end of year sales figures for their respective next-gen consoles and Sony looks to be the one smiling all the way to the bank. Microsoft was the first to announce the sales figures for the Xbox One proudly announcing the fact that they had managed 3 million units sold by the end of the year in the 13 countries where they have already launched the console. Xbox corporate vice president Yusuf Mehdi glowingly praised the Xbox One after it become “the fastest-selling console in the U.S.” when it launched in November and admitted that they were having supply chain issues with many retailers were selling out of their allotment of Xbox Ones during the holiday season.

Sony on the other hand waited until the keynote address by its CEO Kazuo Hirai at the CES conference in Las Vegas this week to announce that the PlayStation 4 has managed 4.2 million units in the same amount of time. Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton has said that they would easily be able to reach 3 million console sales by the end of the year. Considering that Sony hasn’t even launched the console in its home territory of Japan yet were sales of its consoles have been traditionally very strong, we’re expecting the PS4 to have a massive sales figure increase after the February 22nd launch date.

South Africans have of course only had the option to buy the PlayStation 4 so far with the local distributor Ster Kinekor having announced that the first batch of consoles brought into the country for the December 13th launch had completely sold out. On the other hand while the rest of the world has been enjoying their Xbox Ones thought South Africa is still waiting for an official launch date for South Africa with our local Xbox PR stating that the console will definitely arrive in South Africa during 2014.

Luckily we were able to get a hold of the PlayStation 4 on launch day, if you want to see what we thought of it check out our full review.
