App stores pull controversial ‘plastic surgery for Barbie’ app after internet uproar

A controversial app for kids aged 9 and up that required them to perform liposuction on an “unfortunate” overweight Barbie to make her “slim and beautiful”, has been pulled off the US iTunes App and Google Play Stores after causing an uproar on the internet.

The app, called “Plastic Surgery & Plastic Doctor & Plastic Hospital Office for Barbie Version”, instructed kids to use various surgical tools “to make small cuts on problem areas and suck out the extra fat”. Upon completion of the procedure, a slimmer Barbie emerged and the last task was to complete her new look with new hair, make up and clothes.

Word about the app quickly spread across the internet and was picked up by the Everyday Sexism Project, a London-based anti-sexism organisation, that in turn launched a Twitter campaign to have the dubious app removed from both app stores.

The app was then removed hours after Tweets started pouring in in support of the campaign.

It’s quite disheartening to know that such apps exist and are adding to the negative content on what beauty looks like that young girls are exposed to. The app being removed is absolutely great but it would’ve been better had it never even made it onto the respective app stores in the first place. Thumbs up to the ladies of the Everyday Sexism Project.
