Free pizza and the creator of Storify for Joburg devs and journos

Are you a working journalist or a software developer? Are you interested in the myriad of ways the two disciplines combine in the modern world of always-on networks and mobile phones? Do you want to meet the co-founder of Storify, the web tool that turns short bursts of social media into curious context pieces for breaking news stories?

And do you live in Johannesburg? Because if you answered yes to any of the above questions you should:

  • Join your local Hacks/Hackers chapter, because through monthly meet-ups that’s what they do.
  • Get yourself to Piza e Vino in Melville, Johannesburg next Monday night, because Bert Herman – the aforementioned Storify creator – is in town on a whistle stop visit from the US and will be giving a talk on how we do news gathering and reporting in this brave new social world. Herman also helped to found Hacks/Hackers, back in the day. Prior to getting involved with start-ups, Herman was a desk chief for Associated Press and covered various conflict zones as an embedded reporter.

We – and I’ll definitely be going along – will also be talking about ideas for marrying tech and reporting and citizenship and all sorts in the run up to this year’s elections. Data nerds, mobile devs, writers, freelances and journos are all welcome for networking, idea sharing and maybe, just maybe, some really worthwhile work.

Oh, and did we mention that pizza is being provided by AMI?

Full details over at the MeetUp site here.
