Hershey’s to produce its own 3D printed chocolate

America’s largest confectionery treats producer, Hershey’s, has announced that it’s teaming up with 3D printing solutions company, 3D Systems, to produce delectable sweet treats in 3D.

“Whether it’s creating a whole new form of candy or developing a new way to produce it, we embrace new technologies such as 3D printing as a way to keep moving our timeless confectionery treats into the future.”  William Papa, Vice President and Chief Research and Development Officer, The Hershey Company, said in a statement.

The 3D printed food trend has been gaining a lot of momentum lately and this isn’t the first time 3D Systems has ventured into making 3D printers that churn out sweet treats. At CES 2014, the company unveiled two printers, the ChefJet and ChefJet Pro, that can print sweets and chocolate in different shapes.

Neither of the two companies has confirmed a release date or whether the printer itself will be released for purchase or if it will only be used by Hershey’s to print confectionery on an industrial scale.

And while the Americans wait on Hershey’s and 3D Systems, we’ll go ahead and enjoy locally made 3D printed chocolate from Hans and Nicolette Fouche’s very own chocolate-making mini factory in Kempton Park.
