GTA: San Andreas now out for select WP8 phones

Owners of (some) Windows Phone 8 phones rejoice: Microsoft and Rockstar have released Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for the following Windows Phone 8 phones: Nokia Lumia 1520, 1320, 822, 820, 810 and the HTC 8XT.

This comes less than a month after San Andreas was released on the Google Play Store, and just two weeks after it arrived on Apple’s App Store.

This edition of the game has been specially-enhanced to take advantage of new mobile graphics technology, and it looks better than it ever did on its original platform, the PlayStation 2. There are three control schemes to choose from as well, so you can easily find the one that works best for you.

The plot is pretty good, too: San Andreas is set in 1992, and you play as Carl Johnson (“CJ”), a gangster returning home from the big city (Los Santos) on the news of his mom’s murder, only to find his childhood friends on the road to destruction themselves. He tries to get his old neighbourhood gang back together to try and find out what happened to his mom, and along the way he clashes with corrupt local cops, other gangs, and other early-90s tropes based loosely on California’s history.

It’s a beautiful open world game with lots to do, including fighting rival gangs for turf and getting CJ beefed up at the gym or fat and lazy with fast food, and if you haven’t played it yet, now’s the perfect time: GTA: San Andreas is just $6.99 (around R80) on the Windows Phone Store. Grab it before the rand hits R12 to the dollar.
