PS4 price shoots up by R500

You may have noticed that the price of the PlayStation 4 isn’t quite as low as it was at launch – it’s now being listed at R6,799 on Takealot.com.

Incredible Connection’s website still lists the PS4 at its original price (get it while it’s hot), but the fact remains that at least one online etailer, its price has increased. It’s fair to expect others to raise their prices soon, too.

We reached out to Takealot to get some official commentary, and their answer was no real surprise:

“It’s a function of the Rand exchange rate and currency fluctuations.” – Declan Hollywood, Takealot

We also spoke with representatives of the PS4’s official distributor, Ster Kinekor, who confirmed that the company had to put up the PS4’s price due to the rand/dollar exchange rate.

So in just over a month and a half, the PS4 price has gone up by R500, thanks to issues affecting our currency’s value. If you were one of the 20,000 people to get your PS4 in the console’s first two shipments, count yourself lucky.
