In update for Windows 8.1 desktop will be default

With Windows 8.1 Microsoft started the process of bringing back the desktop, and now that’s set to continue. An update for Windows 8.1 will turn on the desktop by default, according to a leak online.

The leaker shows that the update will make booting to desktop the default behaviour in Windows 8.1. Apparently this comes down to Microsoft using the user feedback mechanisms in its operating system to determine common behaviours, and adjust development accordingly. It’s also shown that the update will include shutdown and reboot buttons, which will be shown more prominently on the Start Screen, rather than hidden in the charms sidebar.

When the operating system originally launched with its touchscreen-friendly tile interface of the Start Screen, desktop users shunned it. The change was not only too jarring, with Microsoft removing the traditional Start button, the limited number of apps for the new interface were also less functional than their desktop counterparts. As time passed, Microsoft teased that Windows 8.1 would tweak this, offering an option to boot to the desktop instead of the Start Screen. It would also see the Start button returning, making it more intuitive for long-time Windows users.

Of course, all these tweaks are teased in a preview build of the Windows 8.1 update. There’s a possibility that Microsoft is just testing them, and won’t roll them out. But given the vocal audience of Windows users, this is almost definitely going to be something to look forward to. And, as many would say, it’s about damn time.
