Twitter is more interested in @SochiProblems than the actual Olympic games

It’s not unusual for cities hosting international sporting events to experience a few glitches, but if the popularity of the @SochiProblems Twitter account over the official @Sochi2014 account is anything to go by, everything that’s wrong with the Olympics might be overshadowing the actual games.

Created by Canadian journalism student, Alex Broad, @SochiProblems is an account dedicated to reporting the horrible conditions of most facilities for media and attendees in the city. Broad came up with the idea after reading up on reports by journalists at Sochi. The account has over 336 000 followers, that’s over 118 000 more followers than @Sochi2014’s 218 000 tally, and it has garnered a lot of interest.

“I’m a mess, and not prepared for you! Our athletes live like Kings! Sochi” reads the account’s bio and the photos posted by the account so far seem to back it up.

“I think the popularity of the feed went viral so quickly because of the amp up to the games, the exuberant cost of this year’s Olympics and the unpreparedness of it,” Broad told Yahoo Sports. “I couldn’t believe how much it had escalated and it just blew my mind.”

And what will happen to @SochiProblems after the Olympics come to an end on February 23rd? “I’ve given it thought and I’m stumped,” Broad admits.

It’s basically a bit of brief humour on the side and the Twittersphere certainly doesn’t mind.
