Star Wars goes haute couture at New York Fashion Week

Five of the most memorable characters and locations from Star Wars made an appearance and added a bit of geek chic to the catwalk at New York Fashion Week yesterday, when designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte debuted five  Star Wars-printed silk charmeuse dresses.

Artworks of Luke Skywalker, Yoda, R2-D2, C-3PO, the Death Star and the twin suns of Tatooine were beautifully translated onto the bottom halves of the long, flowing dresses.

“We couldn’t have done a collection like this and not included Star Wars,” Kate Mulleavy told the LA Times. “Those films represent for us a time when anything was possible.”

“And it’s so rare that you can use a film still as artwork and have it look like a painting. It’s so beautiful,” added Laura Mulleavy. Unfortunately, what happens on the catwalk, stays on the catwalk in this case as the dresses are not for sale but will be made available later this year for editorial shoots and potential exhibits.
