The LG G Pro 2 is a Galaxy Note 3 challenger

LG has just announced the G Pro 2 as the successor to the Optimus G Pro phablet that we reviewed last year. The G Pro 2 will have its work cut out for it in the phablet space with the main competition coming in the form of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. The Galaxy Note range is still the undisputed king of the phablet category that it created, but the G Pro 2 has all of the right ingredients to upset the reigning monarch.

The G Pro 2 matches the Galaxy Note 3 on all of the important internal specs with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 3GB of RAM, 16/32GB of expandable (via microSD) internal storage and all of the latest wireless technology including LTE, 802.11ac WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0 on board. Even the user replaceable batteries in both phones are rated at 3200mAh.

While both South Korean phablets have a full HD 1080X1920 displays, the G Pro 2 has the pixels spread out over 5.9-inches as opposed to the 5.7-inches of the Note 3. LG have used the same thin bezel design of the G2 to fit the extra display width into the G Pro 2 without having to bulk it up too much. Seemingly similar 13 megapixel cameras adorn each phone but the G Pro 2 has the benefit of the same optical image stabilisation (OIS) as the G2 as well as an enhanced software package that LG are calling OIS+ and the increased pixel size that we saw with the sensor in the G Flex.

Software wise the G Pro 2 will be running Android 4.4 along with the requisite LG ‘enhancements’ to the operating system. LG’s ‘KnockOn’ feature has morphed from a double tap to turn on/off the display into ‘Knock Code’ a new feature that will see users activate the display by tapping out any one of more than 86 000 different cadence combinations. It seems that new ways to unlock a smartphone are all of the rage right now, however we can’t help wonder if this will become a case of “knick, knack, paddy whack, give someone your code”.

While we are still in limbo on local release dates and pricing we will get the chance to play with the G Pro 2 at LG’s stand at the Mobile World Congress at the end of the month.
