It’s a smartphone only smaller. LG’s sneak peak of the G2 Mini

LG quietly dropped a mini-sized bombshell for Mobile World Congress later this month by posting the first picture of the LG G2 Mini on its Facebook page. The image of random objects accompanied by their ‘mini’ counterparts has a full size LG G2 next to a smaller smartphone bearing the LG logo and the familiar rear-button configuration of recent LG phones.

LG is late to the party when it comes to miniaturising flagships smartphones. Samsung is on the second generation of shrunken down flagships with the Galaxy S4 Mini, while HTC’s One Mini and the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact are also out and about.

The post revealed nothing by the way of hardware specifications for the G2 Mini but we can make some assumptions from the competitor devices already out there. While the smartphones from Samsung, HTC and Sony all had reduced resolutions from their full HD, full-sized counterparts Samsung was the only one who dropped below 720p with the S4 Mini. For internal specifications both Samsung and HTC opted for reduced power in both processors and RAM but Sony chose to give the Xperia Z1 Compact the same internals as the flagship Xperia Z1 which was one of the main reasons that it won the Best Mobile Technology award at CES in January.

Being late to the party means that LG would have had the opportunity to see the reactions to the choices made by the competition in both the media and in sales figures. One thing is for sure, if the LG G2 Mini is anything like its big brother then it will be a force to be reckoned with. We’ll be at the Mobile World Congress show and will bring you all of the latest news about the G2 Mini as and when it happens.
