Facebook adds 50 new gender options for users

Facebook is taking the limitations off its identity options to allow users to choose a gender from 50 new listed pronouns.

“The changes initially cover the company’s 159 million monthly users in the U.S. and are aimed at giving people more choices in how they describe themselves, such as androgynous, bi-gender, intersex, gender fluid or transsexual,” the company told the Associated Press.

“This new feature is a step forward in recognizing transgender people and allows them to tell their authentic story in their own words,” GLAAD President Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement. “Once again, Facebook is on the forefront of ensuring that the platform is safe and accessible to all of its LGBT users.”

The options are only available in the US for now, but Facebook plans to roll them out to the rest of the world in the near future.
