Gran Turismo 5’s DLC gone from the PSN Store from April 30

Sony announced late in 2013 that all of the online services for Gran Turismo 5 and several other Sony properties will be discontinued on May 30, 2014. Parts of GT5 that will be affected include the Online Lobby, Seasonal Events, Museum, News, Community, Remote Race, Log in Bonus and Online Dealership features.

The game will still be playable in offline mode, of course, but its downloadable content won’t be available in the store  and you won’t be able to race against your mates anymore.

But all is not lost. If you’ve bought any of the game’s DLC and want to ensure it will always be available to download in the future, even if you somehow lose all of the data on your current PS3, you’ll need to jump through a few hoops before the online services shut down.

You’ll need to download and install a small piece of downloadable content called the “Family Upgrade” DLC, and it will be available for free via the Gran Turismo 5 section of the PlayStation Store. Just be sure to install it before April 30, the date Sony has chosen as GT5’s DLC death knell.

The content being removed from the store includes the “Racing Car Pack” and “Course Pack” DLCs, and parts thereof.

Since Gran Turismo 6 is out, it makes sense for Sony to wind down its support for the older game, but it’s a bit surprising that the company is also removing all of GT5’s downloadable content from the PSN Store, too.

For more information, head over to Sony’s official GT5 news page.

If you have a hankering for a racing simulator for your PS3 that’s a little more recent, Gran Turismo 6 is a good buy. If your tastes are more arcade-like, EA’s excellent next-gen racer Need for Speed: Rivals should scratch that itch to your satisfaction.
