Japan sells 322k PlayStation 4s in first two days

So Japan finally got the PlayStation 4 on February 22. But being among the last countries to get it hasn’t put a damper on sales, as Japanese gaming website Famitsu reported Sony sold over 322,000 PlayStation 4 consoles in the first two days of its availability in the region.

That’s almost four times as many PS4s sold at launch as PS3s back in 2006 – a comparatively tepid figure of just 88,443.

Sony’s just demolishing the milestones with the PS4, as this latest success comes just days after NPD Group Data announced that Sony had sold over 5.3 million consoles worldwide as of mid-February.

Microsoft, on the other hand, sold 3 million Xbox Ones in 2013 compared to Sony’s 4.2 million PS4s, and has recently reduced the price of the console in the UK by £30. They’ve also offered the console bundled with popular FPS Titanfall at the new price in an effort to boost sales.

For the moment, it definitely does seem like Sony is winning the console wars, but don’t count Microsoft out yet. Today’s situation is almost the exact opposite of the PS3 and Xbox 360 launches from the mid-2000s, where Microsoft appeared to be in the lead and Sony battled to get the PS3 launched in Europe, resulting in a huge 14 month head-start for the Xbox 360.

Despite that lead, lifetime sales of both consoles show that the PS3 ultimately won the previous-gen console war, with figures pulled from VHChartz.com today showing that the PS3 has to date outsold the 360 by an impressive 1.38 million units.

PS3 vs Xbox 360

So even though their fortunes are somewhat reversed this time around, don’t think for a second that Microsoft won’t do anything in its considerable power to come out on top in the long run.

Best of all? Whatever happens, it’s the gamers who’re going to win, as each company does its level best to woo gamers to their respective platforms.
