Four Corners filesharer back in court on Fools Day

The prosecution of a Cape Town man for sharing a copy of the unreleased South African film Four Corners online has been postponed until 1st April, following a hearing in the Bellville Commercial Crimes Court yesterday.

The case, which is understood to be the first of its kind in South Africa, is being brought with the assistance of the South African Federation Against Copyright Theft (SAFACT).

The accused, a Mr Norton, is charged with seeding a file containing the film via the Pirate Bay. The torrent link in question, which was uploaded on 21st November 2013, has now been removed.

Norton was arrested for contravention of the Counterfeit Goods Act, and if convicted as a first offender will face a fine of up to R5 000, up to three years in jail, or both. Norton first appeared in court on 13th December. On 1st April the accused will be asked to enter a plea – if he pleads not guilty the case will again be postponed pending a full trial.

Four Corners, a crime drama set on the Cape Flats, was directed by Ian Gabriel and is due to be released on 28th March and deals with the subjects of “love, loss, betrayal and redemption” in the ganglands.
