MWC 2014: The king of the Android tablets – Sony’s new Tablet Z2

Sony had a strong presence at last week’s Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona. While many were focused on the latest handset from the company, the Xperia Z2, the sleeping hit may have been the much larger Xperia Tablet Z2.

Much like its predecessor, the original Xperia Tablet Z, the Tablet Z2 has a 10.1-inch 1200X1920 resolution display locked into a water and dust-proof casing. It still has the same footprint on a table but has managed to shrink from the already minuscule 6.9mm down to just 6.4mm in the new tablet. The back of the tablet uses the same soft touch matte black plastic as its predecessor which feels fantastic in hand but can accumulate fingerprints remarkably quickly.

However similar it may look to its predecessor though, the Tablet Z2 is better in almost every conceivable way.

In terms of hardware the Tablet Z2 gets the same upgrade as the Xperia Z2 smartphone has with 3GB of RAM joining a Qualcomm made Snapdragon 801 processor which makes it just as snappy as any premium smartphone that was announced at the show. The latest version of Android 4.4 KitKat adorns the Xperia Tablet 2 along with Sony’s rather minimal customisations which has rolled out to the original tab as well. The camera remains the same at 8 megapixels but the software features from the smartphone Zs has made its way into the tablet as well.

There are a number of accessories for the new tablet including speaker docks and charging stations that utilise the proprietary Sony connector that has become standard fare on the X series of phones and tablets. What piqued our interest was that the LTE equipped version of the Tablet Z2 was able to make phone calls and had a remote control accessory that doubled up as a handset.
