Online multiplayer ending for Wii, DS this May

On May 20, 2014, Nintendo plans to kill the online services that make it possible for Wii and Nintendo DS/DSi players to play against one another online.

The announcement, which was confirmed last week by a statement sent out by the company, basically said that certain functionalities available through Nintendo’s Wi-Fi Connection service will be discontinued for the Wii and the original DS.

The Wii Shop Channel and Nintendo DSi Shop and video on demand services will still be accessible from those two systems, and games will still play fine in offline mode, but multiplayer matchups and online leaderboards will no longer be available from the 20th of May.

With the Wii U struggling at retail both in South Africa and abroad, cutting access to gaming with Nintendo’s older hardware might be a clever move on the company’s part, as it may gently encourage players to consider upgrading to the newer Wii U.

Fortunately, the Wii U’s game selection is improving. Recent hits like Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and Super Mario 3D World have earned good enough ratings (93 and 82 on Metacritic, respectively) to attract Nintendo fans over to the Wii U, plus there are a bunch of nice-looking titles coming in 2014, like Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. For Wii U giving gamers plenty of reasons to pick one up.
