Microsoft looking to bring Xbox Live to iOS, Android

A job posting on Microsoft’s Careers portal has shown that the company is hiring people with the skills needed to bring Xbox Live functionality to iOS and Android games. The job posting has since been taken down, but not before being spotted by the keen eyes over at The Verge.

Xbox Live is Microsoft’s gaming service that governs things like achievement unlocks and multiplayer match-ups, while also providing gamers a place to buy games and their associated digital content.

The job description says

We will create a modern framework that is open-source, lightweight, extensible and scalable across various platforms including Windows Store, Windows Phone, iOS, and Android.

By making it easier to integrate the service into the two most popular mobile platforms (their own isn’t doing so well), The Verge says Microsoft is hoping developers will feel more inclined to bring their games over to Xbox Live regardless of whether they’re Windows, iOS or Android games.

Xbox Live has essentially been locked to Microsoft’s Xbox gaming consoles and Windows via the soon-to-be-defunct Games for Windows – Live service, and seeing it spread to other platforms offers Microsoft the chance to reach a brand-new audience.

Should this job posting actually come to something, gamers could be unlocking achievements and adding to their Gamerscores in future Android and iOS games.

This is a pretty interesting development from a business perspective, too, as it seems to indicate that Microsoft’s newest CEO is not above acknowledging (albeit indirectly) that Microsoft’s own platforms aren’t proving quite as popular as they’d like.
