PlayStation 4 sales reaches 6 million milestone

Sony announced yesterday that as of March 2, 2014, over 6 million PlayStation 4 consoles have been sold worldwide. That’s a million more than their fiscal year-end target of 5 million sales, and there are still over three weeks to go before the end of March.

That’s one mightily impressive milestone for Sony. The figure was helped along by the February 22 launch in Japan, which saw 322,000 consoles sold in the region within the first 48 hours of availability, with the current Japanese total sitting at 370,000 consoles sold as at 2 March.

PS4 game sales in both retail stores and digitally via PSN have topped 13.7 million, and 3 million gamers have signed up for PlayStation Plus. That’s probably because Plus is now required to play multiplayer, and games like Killzone: Shadow Fall and Call of Duty are designed to be played against real-life people. It doesn’t hurt that Plus gives gamers free games to play for their subscription fee, as well.

Sony also mentioned that gamers are really taking advantage of the sharing functionality built into the console, with over 100 million shares to date and 3.6 million gaming sessions broadcast over Twitch.tv.

Nobody can dispute that this is a very strong start for Sony’s latest games console. It will be interesting to see what Microsoft does to win over gamers in the coming months and years, and what will happen to their sales figures when their console launches in more territories than just the US and Europe.
