Map(s) Monday: The universe squashed and Africa upside down

So many awesome maps out there on the internet, so little time to link to them all. Don’t worry, cartography nerds – we’re doing our best. And to make up for lost time, here’s two awesome maps for this week.

The first is a spectacular view of the near universe – everything within 380 million light years. Spotted over at Ars Technica this morning, it was produced by the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and taken by Micron All-Sky Survey Redshift Survey. Click below for a massive high res image.

The 2MASS Redshift Survey (2MRS) has catalogued more than 43,000 galaxies within 380 million light-years from Earth (z<0.09). In this projection, the plane of the Milky Way runs horizontally across the center of the image. 2MRS is notable for extending closer to the Galactic plane than previous surveys - a region that's generally obscured by dust. The second was discovered in a Reddit thread – What would Africa look like if it had never been colonised. It’s an example of an upside-down map – relatively unusual but not uncommon – put together by Arabic scholars in the mid-19th century.
